Using Secure Wristbands to Help Identify
Visitors
If you want to use
wristbands to control visitor access, ensure
that the wristbands cannot be transferred or
reused.
Many businesses,
such as hospitals, use wristbands as a form of
identification for clients and visitors. While
staff members will usually wear badges, visitors
might be identified by another method. Having
two different forms of ID make it clear to staff
members and visitors alike the status of anyone
they encounter. This is a significant way to
enhance security.
If you want to use wristbands to control visitor
access, ensure that the wristbands cannot be
transferred or reused. In a hospital, this is
especially important; you don’t want to have a
patient or visitor to have access to drugs and
medications not prescribed for them and that
could be dangerous for them. With the patient's
name and diagnosis printed on a non-transferable
wristband, you can minimize the chance of this
happening.
Durable, secure wristbands must be made from a
synthetic rather than paper. A material such as
Tyvek® is an example. The wristband should be
resistant to water, alcohol, and abrasion. The
only way to remove a non-transferable wristband
is to cut it. This ensures that once a wristband
has been fastened, it cannot be given to another
person.
If you want to differentiate between different
kinds of visitors, or visitors to different
areas, you can order different colors of
wristbands. You might want to use wristbands to
indicate whether a person’s ID has been checked
or whether he or she can drink alcohol. Or you
might also want to differentiate between
visitors and patients in a hospital. With the
wide variety of colors available, you can color
code for any system that you want.
