Using Self-Expiring Badges to Control Visitor
Access
To ensure that
someone with permission to enter your building
does not abuse the privilege and return
uninvited, you might consider self-expiring ID
badges for visitors.
Many of the
problems related to temporary ID badges are
eliminated by this ingenious method. With a
brief glance, your security personnel know
whether a visitor’s ID badge is still current.
This will save time and increase the level of
security in your facilities.
Ordinary ID badges must be collected when
visitors leave. It may be very difficult or even
impossible to ensure that every visitor turns in
his or her badge before leaving, even if you
designate a staff member to maintain constant
vigilance. Your staff will also have to be
checking the date and times on visitors’ badges
to make sure they are current, or you could
develop an elaborate color-coding system for
each day of the week.
Self-expiring badges are available in half days,
single days, and weekly to monthly durations. If
someone will be working on site for three days,
he could be given a single-day badge for each
day. This would still be easier and more
efficient than any other method of visitor
identification.
To activate a self-expiring badge, you stick the
front printed sheet onto a background sheet. The
background sheet has stripes that emerge over a
specific period of time. Pre-assembled
self-expiring badges are also available. They
have a liner between the front and back panels
that is attached on one side. To activate this
type of self-expiring badge, you tear out the
liner and press the front and back panels
together.
