ID Badge Printers and Printing

Many businesses want to print two-dimensional bar codes on badges, and only certain models can do this.

Direct thermal (LP) and thermal transfer (TLP) are the two ways of printing badges. They can handle two- and four-inch printing jobs, which are standard for almost every industry. Two-inch wide printing jobs are perfect for wristbands, which are used by many hospitals, bars, clubs, and special events that charge admission. Four-inch badges are common for employee and visitor identification and parking passes for display in visitors' cars.

In addition to size, you must specify whether you want LP or TLP. You must also decide whether you want color or graphics. Many businesses want to print two-dimensional bar codes on badges, and only certain models can do this. Others want to put color-coded data on the badge to identify different types of visitors. In the later case, you must make sure you get a printer model with the required color cartridges.

Your badges must be compatible with your printer. Some software is designed to work with standard ink cartridges or laser printers, and you may use standard Avery labels or cardstock for the badges. The badges can be laminated for durability if you like. You must have specific software or paper materials for other printers.

Self-expiring labels and laminating badge printers require a precise correlation of specialized equipment and supplies. Label printers are not usually proprietary, which means that you can combine different software programs and label materials with any printer, but in some cases the paper and the printer are not compatible. It is best to check with your supplier or manufacturer to make sure that you have compatible products and that you have a source for ordering supplies as needed.
