Dealing with Security Issues in Hospitals
Hospitals have
many different wards with various security
concerns that require a method of identifying
both patients and visitors.
In the maternity
ward, it’s especially important to also identify
babies and their mothers as well as visitors.
Babies should be identified with safe, secure,
and non-transferable wristbands with their
mother’s name that cannot be removed easily.
Highly contagious patients should be identified
so that they are not inadvertently exposed to
other patients. Vendors, volunteers,
outpatients, inpatients, and staff members all
need to be identified differently. Since a
hospital has multiple exits, it would be nearly
impossible to collect all IDs and passes, so
it’s important to have a security system in
place that is easy to use and yet provides for
many different forms of ID that are easily
recognized by staff and visitors alike.
Hospital staff should have permanent badges,
perhaps with magnetic stripes to allow entry
into restricted areas. High security areas in
hospitals may also use voice recognition,
fingerprint scanners, or even retinal scanners.
These devices are effective in protecting people
and information by making it nearly impossible
for unauthorized individuals to get past a
checkpoint.
